An additional bonus was using a Double Ring Infiltrometer. Students were asked to help locate areas on the 9 th green that may have too much or too little water. They also used a prism gauge to determine the height of cut of the green, collar, and rough around the green – and were able to check out the club’s various machinery that helps get the work done on a daily basis. They also had a putting contest to get clubs into the hands of kids who had never tried golf before. “We want to stay involved with the community and help teach the kids about some of the things we do to keep a golf course in good condition – maybe get kids down the road trying a turfgrass career, or just introduce them to the game of golf in general,” Poley said. “What really jumped out to me was when we asked them how many had every been on a golf course before, very few hands were raised. But once we got them engaged, I thought they stayed focused and probably took away some really good lessons from the day.” School teachers who may want to get their classrooms involved anywhere across Michigan should write to: info@migcsa.org 23 June 2019 www.michigangolfjournal.com
