It rates courses for the same reason, to have a measurement of each courses’ toughness balanced against the handicap system. But there is so much more. GAM runs several dozen tournaments, ranging from the premier men’s and women’s Michigan Amateurs, to Junior tournaments and qualifiers for the U.S. Open. But there are also opportunities like father-child handicapped events, the GAM Scramble for teams, and GAM Golf Days that open private courses to all golfers at a low rate and with prizes provided using their handicap. “If you’ve never played a tournament before we have a tournament you would enjoy,” Whitten said. “There is something for every handicap level. And all the GAM volunteers, we’re golfers too.
