There Hoffmann says he spent each day with a family whose 13-year-old son has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, for which he said most people do not live past age 25. The family found Hoffmann through The First Tee. “The family was really low key, and I just went and we hung out,” said Hoffmann, who’s diagnosis is not nearly as grave as the young teen. “It was really special. That was just really cool to spend time with someone who is in kind of the same boat – but has it much worse – yet he has a great, positive outlook on life. We played basketball and golf, played catch all day. He can only really swing with one arm, but he was hitting it. It was cool to see.” Healthy Eating is Major Change: Hoffmann did not hold back on his negative opinions of ‘western medicine’ and has vowed to find a cure for the disease. He started a foundation in Florida to research Muscular Dystrophy and help those diagnosed with it live healthier lives in the meantime. “It’s been non-stop studying how to help and aide and cure this disease that’s un-curable, at least in the United States they tell me that,” Hoffmann said. “They said ‘it’s incurable and good luck,’ which really frustrated me. So that’s when I went overseas to Nepal for four months for Ayurvedic treatment and it helped a bit. But it’s still not fully cured so I’m still researching and I’m very strict on diet. I’m a big believer that a raw, alkaline, vegan diet can help cure a lot of diseases and also change your genetics. I’m in that kind of experimental stage right now.” Hoffmann does not eat any cooked or prepared foods – just fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts – and he drinks only alkaline water. Return to the PGA Tour: Taking time off from the Tour was necessary for Hoffmann to fully dedicate Hoffmann teamed up with former Ralph Lauren designer, Charlie Schaefer, a Birmingham, MI native, to start Greyson Clothiers.
