New Sage Run Course at Island Resort adds to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a Top Golf Destination

Provided by Island Resort and Casino

Wherever summer takes a person across the Great Lakes state of Michigan, a golf course is certain to appear, and dozens of top golf courses have been built across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula over the past decade.

Long well-known for its hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and meat pies called pasties, add golf to that U.P. popularity list. The Upper Peninsula has joined Michigan’s reputation as one of the country’s top golf destinations.

The latest course to join the award-winning list of courses in the region is Sage Run at the Island Resort and Casino located 13 miles west of Escanaba.

Sage Run is scheduled to open July 10.

Sage Run joins the celebrated Sweetgrass course at the resort for the Hannahville Indian Community, and offers a contrasting style and design by Paul Albanese, the architect of each course. The land at Sage Run is 180 degrees in contrast from its sister course Sweetgrass with its prairie links style.

Sage Run meanders through beautiful Upper Peninsula hardwoods and open vistas with very dramatic views. A natural drumlin, or elongated hill or ridge formed by glacial ice long ago, is the primary feature on Sage Run. Golf holes were routed up and around the hill offering a scenic variety of shots creating a fun thrill ride for golfers.

A variety of long and short golf holes with long fescue grasses lining the fairway and edging the bunkers, as well as creative short part fours with some blind shots, will challenge golfers of all abilities. Albanese said Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, rated among the world’s top courses, served as inspiration.

When golfers come off the new Sage Run or Sweetgrass courses, they will experience one of the Midwest’s largest golf, casino and entertainment resort destinations featuring over 300 guest rooms and a 42-site RV park. Add in a wide variety of amenities including the luxurious Drift Spa with access to the resort’s salt water pool, steam rooms, and saunas, as well as a variety of dining and entertainment options to make this a top golf vacation experience.
