Michigan Golf Journal July 2019
Geez, what a wet, rough spring in Michigan. But, isn’t that often the case with northern golf? It’s part of why national pundits refer to us Michiganders as a golf diehard, blue-collar, bunch. But we made it through yet again and should have a spectacular summer ahead of outstanding Michigan golf. Some great events have already taken place in Michigan as golfers dodged the rain drops and wet areas – such as the high school golf season and state finals, the Michigan Open, the Michigan Women’s Open and the Michigan Amateur. Check out a wrap up on page 27. Other highlights include the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids and the Rocket Mortgage PGA Tour’s inaugural visit to Detroit – pro events that displayed excellent golf and raised huge sums of money for charities in both regions. Then there was the visit from golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, who came to Oakland Hills the week of the Michigan Amateur to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the GAM and help raise well over $100,000 for the GAM Foundation’s mission of funding Youth on Course (see pages 4-9). I can’t think of a better way for any golf fan to spend an evening than hearing about the thoughts and memories as only Jack has experienced them. A final hats off to the superintendents who kept our golf courses playable this past spring despite the huge weather challenges – and best wishes for a prosperous summer for the industry.
