Michigan Golf Journal September 2019

Visually deceptive. Visually stunning. Two images that at first seem to contradict each other, yet properly describe what golfers will find at Arcadia Bluffs – as well as its new sister property, the South Course. Now in its 20 th year, Arcadia Bluffs along the Lake Michigan shoreline has been tagged by many local and national media as the No. 1 public course in Michigan – especially for its 18 links-style holes that resemble an Ireland experience – making it a destination course. With the new South Course one-mile down M-22, Arcadia doubled its efforts for destination distinction, aided by the fact in August its new clubhouse opened just behind the 18 th green. Arcadia Bluffs in particular is, without doubt, visually stunning on its elevated perch along the shore of Lake Michigan. For the same reason it can be considered visually deceptive because at first glance, the deep, sod- faced bunkers and severely mounded landscape with its windswept golden heather can make any golfer take a big gulp even before teeing it up. However, most holes have plenty of room off the tee, especially the front nine, and golfers have a real shot at playing well if they pay attention and don’t allow the gorgeous and unique landscape to infiltrate their minds. Well, okay, good luck with that.
