Michigan Golf Journal PGA Tour in Reach A Change in Plans Donnie Trosper’s Success Leads to New Adventures on the PGA Tour By Tom Lang It’s funny how success can alter even the best laid-out plans. That happened to Canton resident Donnie Trosper in the fall of 2019. His college golf eligibility was used up after one season (2018-19) on the golf team at Michigan State after playing three years at University of Central Florida (UCF). Yet he was still taking classes at MSU and on track to graduate this spring of 2020. He decided to try the Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in November, with All-Big Ten awards and the MSU all-time season scoring record of 71.37 stuffed comfortably in his back pocket. He played well, scoring under par in every round in every stage to earn his KF Tour card with limited status, all while trying to keep up with the few remaining college classes and playing in Monday qualifiers of the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing in the winter. Long story short, golf shut down due to Covid-19. So, when pro golf returned to action in June, he made the best of it. The former Canton High player Monday qualified for two consecutive PGA Tour events – first for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, then for the Workday Charity Open, the first of the two PGA Tour events staged at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village. After missing the cut in Detroit, he didn’t pout. Instead, he fired back to win the second consecutive
