Michigan Golf Journal Travel: Pinehurst Resort The Home of Golf in America , the Pinehurst Resort in Moore County, North Carolin a opened early June for guests. Having shut down like most of golf for a time this spring – only Pinehurst #6 did remain open as it’s for members only – the experience had similar ties in history for one of America’s most historic resorts. In 1895, James Walker Tufts initially purchased 500 acres and eventually added 5,500 more in the North Carolina Sandhills with the vision of building “a health resort for people of modest means,” to help with the disease commonly known as Consumption. He named it Pinehurst thinking that the scent of the ever-present pine trees would help those afflicted.
