He has played on the PGA Champions Tour with Michigander and former amateur Tom Werkmeister – a Warren native who now lives near Grand Rapids. “I think there’s a little bit of a bond there, being the little guy out on the Tour, competing against guys who made a career out of being on the PGA Tour, and doing really, really well there,” Tanigawa said. “We’re a bit of an outsider in the sense we really didn’t go down that road. There’s a bit of a connection there.” Tanigawa credits regaining his amateur status for a time as helping his outlook in his ‘second pro career.’ “Amateur golf really rekindled just playing for the sake of playing with no strings attached to the results or outcomes,” he said. “It kind of makes you fall in love with the game to just play for the sake of enjoyment, because amateur golf is pretty much just that.
