Michigan Golf Journal ichigan News and Notes Shank this Virus Carl’s Golfland has been running a special fundraiser while bringing the golf community together with a T-Shirt program raising money for organizations on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight. As of mid-April, Carl’s Golfland has been able to donate $75,000 to groups like the American Red Cross, Henry Ford Health System, Hurley Medical Center, St. Joseph Mercy and Say Detroit Health Clinic. Golfers are also being encouraged to post photos wearing the T-Shirts on social media. MGJ State’s Top Superintendent Steve Hammon, a Grand Rapids native and the golf course superintendent at Traverse City Golf & Country Club for 23 years, has been selected as the 2020 Golf Association of Michigan Superintendent Award of Merit winner. The award is among a handful of awards normally announced during the GAM Annual Meeting, but that meeting is being held this year in a different format due to the current public health concerns and restrictions. Hammon started with Traverse City G&C in 1997 following career stops that included being the superintendent for The Old Course at Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion, an assistant at Crystal Downs Country Club in Frankfort and various grounds staff roles at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Cypress Point Club and Riviera Country Club in California and Coral Ridge Country Club in Florida.
