By Tom Lang College Corner Michigan G lf Journal Both Michigan State and Oakland University’s men’s and women’s golf teams are being treated with significantly upgraded training centers – MSU’s is outdoors to add to the spectacular indoor facility already on site, and Oakland will soon be getting an indoor version. MSU has taken an old, small driving range area right out the front door of the indoor facility and turned it into a spectacular short game area with seven greens and nine bunkers and an intimate routing for a par 3 course if desired. More than 300 truckloads of dirt and sand was brought in last fall, and currently grass is growing on top of the deep sand base. A September grand opening is planned. “We want this to as firm of a playing surface as we can get, and we’ll be able to get it that way (as early as) mid- March,” men’s coach Casey Lubahn said. “This will be the driest piece of property around,” due to the elevation change from a former low- lying area that in the spring would rarely dry out.
