World renowned course designer Gil Hanse and a couple golfers took his newest, masterful re- design at the Oakland Hills South Course for a “dry- run” in mid-July. Yet there was nothing dry about the day as rain poured down during the entire round the same day metro Detroit saw major flooding for the second time in a couple weeks. But that’s okay because Hanse and head pro Steve Brady observed first-hand the ultimate ‘water test’ of Oakland Hills pass with an A-plus. “One of the things that we did learn (that day) was that the greens and the bunkers drained beautifully,” Hanse later told a small group of golf media via Zoom. “We didn’t see any water movement in the bunkers and the greens still played firm and true. Water in the fairways actually went where we hoped it would go and was moving in the right direction.
