Ice Golf on Lake Huron For golfers who simply cannot wait! By Tom Lang For people who have the golf itch this winter, here’s a way to get outdoors with a very unique head start on spring. Ice Golf. For 35 years, the U.P. Ice Golf Scramble has been a staple in St. Ignace, on the iced-over Lake Huron. Started by the local Mackinac Grille restaurant, and more recently carried forward by the St. Ignace Visitor’s Bureau, visitors far and wide can participate Feb. 26-27 and have a terrific time chasing that little white ball – er, yellow, orange or any other color ball – ‘across the frozen tundra’ of the great Lake Huron. “Ice golf in St. Ignace takes place at the end of the winter – and if you’re a golfer, which I am, it gives you that comforting feeling that I think all recreational activities do; the end of one season and the start of the next,” said Andy Brown, a 54-year-old resident of St. Ignace. “The transition from ice and snow to blue water and sunny skies.
