Kewaygoshkum, founded the annual golf outing of Native American Tribes from across Michigan and the country. For him it has always been about family – but now it’s about supporting charities as well. What was before affectionately known as the Bob K Golf Classic the previous 29 consecutive years, in late 2020 became the Heroes Cup Golf Invitational, presented by Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos. Its mission is to honor and help raise funds for northern Michigan organizations that support military veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, and other community heroes. “I call this kind of a family reunion every year,” Kewaygoshkum said. “We might not see each other each year in between so it’s nice to come back and connect again. You come back to check on your family.” Steve Timmer, Chief Marketing Officer for Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos, said $5,000 was raised for the Munson Healthcare COVID-19 Response Fund last year. This year’s event is August 28, with proceeds to benefit Veterans in Crisis, a Traverse City nonprofit that supports veterans who have been honorably or medically discharged with financial, mental health, and job support programs.
