Michigan Golf Journal July 2021
Michigan Golf Journal Concours d’Elegance For over 40 years, the Concours of America at St. John’s has brought the most beautiful examples of the finest cars from around the country to Michigan. This year is no exception. The event is organized to showcase groups of astounding cars from similar eras or genres and always features special, curated displays that tell a story about a particular theme. This year the show is celebrating Detroit’s most prolific collectors with hand-picked examples from several local enthusiasts. Among them are David Fischer, Larry Smith, Ken Lingenfelter, Tom Celani, and the Stahl Collection. Perhaps the piece de resistance of the Detroit Collections is Ted Stahl’s 1963 Chrysler Turbine, with its jet-age turbine engine. Chrysler built 55 turbine cars as an experiment in a new kind of propulsion. Of the 55 built, all but nine were destroyed. It is one of the rarest and most intriguing collectibles in America and was recently acquired at a cost exceeding one million dollars.
