Michigan Golf Journal June 2021
29 June 2021 www.michigangolfjournal.com A “I’ve been amazed by the number of people who responded to the story. This isn’t just an LPGA problem. It’s an all of women’s golf problem. Too many courses lack enough teeing options for women to be able to reach par 4s in regulation. “I loved it when men told me they had a lightbulb moment after reading the story: It’s not about making it so that a woman (their mom, daughter, friend) lands her tee shot in the same general area as them. It’s about making sure they have a similar club in on the second shot.” Q You were not born in Michigan, but we hear your husband was and that your family visits here often. What types of things strike you about Michigan that would bring you here even without the family connection? A “I had no idea that the coastline of the Upper Peninsula was so jaw- droppingly gorgeous. Our Pictured Rocks hike a few summers ago was incredible. We love to fish, hunt waterfalls and lighthouses and chase the sunset on Sugarloaf Mountain. The lakes are a great summer escape. And I haven’t even mentioned golf yet!” Q Do you play much golf here, and/ or have any ‘Michigan Bucket List’ courses? A Greywalls, Arcadia Bluffs, Forest Dunes, Bay Harbor and Pilgrim’s Run are among my favorites so far. I’d love to get to Crystal Downs and Treetops. The UAW Black Lake Course was a stern but beautiful test. The kind of place you’d like to get a second crack at.” Q What does it say on a national stage that Michigan hosts 2 LPGA Tour events? A “I think Michigan hosts two of the best stops on tour. Have you seen the Grand Taste Experience at the Meijer LPGA Classic? It’s an event within an event. And the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational team tournament offers one of the most intriguing formats of the year. Golf in Michigan isn’t talked about enough as far as I’m concerned.” Continues on next page >>
