Evans Scholars Christyanna Griffin and Bianca Holsey are two Detroit Cass Tech High School seniors, and girls who are part of an upward trend of more female caddies earning the prestigious Evans Scholarship, the most historic and renowned full housing and tuition college grant awarded to golf caddies. Like all Evans Scholar winners, the two girls reflect the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record; excellent academics; demonstrated financial need; and outstanding character. All 30 Michigan caddies chosen for 2021 will attend either Michigan State, or the University of Michigan to continue their educations. In 2005, 19 percent of women were given Evans Scholarships. As of last year, the number had climbed to 30 percent nationwide. Out of Michigan’s 30 winners this year, seven are girls. The Evans Scholarship is valued at an estimated $120,000 over four years. Its history dates to 1930, and more than 11,320 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles ‘Chick’ Evans Jr. “These young students all have shown excellence in the classroom and in their communities, as well as on the golf course,” said John Kaczkowski, WGA President and CEO. “We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family.” Griffin has three siblings and must remain a role model to them as the oldest child of a 30 Michigan Caddies Awarded as Evans Scholars By Tom Lang Continues on next page >>
