Forest Akers has also hosted Big Ten league tournaments and the annual Mary Fossom Invitational, over the years. • Grand Valley State men’s golf opened play at the 2021 GLIAC Championship with team and individual records at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan. The Lakers shot an opening round 271 (-13), bettering the -12 (276) team score in 2017. Freshman Drew Coble of Lake Orion set a GVSU and GLIAC individual mark with an opening-round 64 (7-under) that included seven birdies and 11 pars. Coach Gary Bissell won GLIAC Coach of the Year for a 4 th time. • Grand Valley State women’s team won the 2021 GLIAC Women’s Golf Championship with a 4-1 win over Wayne State in Medal Match play. GVSU, the top seed after stroke play, claimed a 4-1 over Davenport in the semifinals. GVSU has now won three straight GLIAC titles and a GLIAC-best 15 all-time. • The Michigan State men’s golf team won its first tournament of the season when it took the title at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana in early April; while senior James Piot also took medalist honors to give the Spartans a sweep of the hardware with a seven-shot win.
