High School Golf Pro Hockey Player Leads Brighton High Golf Team By Tom Lang Brighton High School senior Davis Codd has found himself in a very unique situation for a 17-year-old. And it’s all good news. Codd signed a pro contract to play hockey for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at age 15. Now, almost two years later and a cancelled OHL 2020-21 season due to Covid-19, Codd is back at Brighton High playing golf for the Bulldogs and coach Jimmy Dewling. Codd earned Livingston County Golfer of the Year in 2019 as a sophomore after finishing T6 in the Division 1 state finals. Then he turned pro and came a full season of pro hockey until Covid shut it all down during the playoffs in March, 2020. While the OHL season remains suspended more than 12 months later and he waits patiently to return, Codd was able to petition the MHSAA and regain his amateur status for golf. “It’s allowed me to play a little golf during this time off,” he said. “I’m a hockey player first, but when I am out on the course, I am a hockey player playing golf. I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself; I just go out there and enjoy it, and be the athlete that I am.” Continues on next page >>
