College Corner The Grand Valley State men’s golf team tees off its 2021 season by hosting the Arendsen Invitational in Allendale, Michigan on Sept. 5. The team returns 2021 GLIAC Champion Nick Krueger, who won the championships scoring 10-under. Kruger finished 12 th at the 2021 NCAA D2 Regionals, closing out the season with an average of 71.29 strokes per round. Freshman Drew Coble (Lake Orion) followed closely behind with a 71.41 average and tied for second at the GLIAC Championships. Both men were named to the GCAA First Team All-Midwest Region. Coble was also named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year. “We are excited to get the 2021-2022 season underway with a talented young group. Our focus this year will be on developing our talent every day in order to grow into a nationally competitive team by the spring,” said Men’s Head Coach Gary Bissell. The men’s team set the GLIAC 36-hole record in stroke play at the conference tournament, but fell in Medal Match play to finish as runner-up. National Semifinalists in 2021, the women’s team returns on Monday, September 13, at the Indianapolis Fall Invitational in Indiana. Megan Miron makes her way back to tee off for the Lakers after finishing third at the 2021 GLIAC Championships with a +1. Closely behind was fourth-place finisher Julia Sanchez with a two-over par. Miron and Sanchez tied for 31 st at the NCAA National Championships, each scoring +18 over three rounds. Miron earned WGCA Division II All-East Region honors and was named the 2021 GLIAC Freshman of the Year. “I am really excited about Team 14 and the potential this team has this season. Despite our youth, we have ladies with a ton of pressure experiences under their belts,” said Women’s Head Coach Rebecca Mailloux.
