Michigan Golf Journal October 2022

Get Those October Rounds In! FRED ALTVATER PUBLISHER Back 9 Media Group Also Publishes: Ohio Golf Journal Indiana Golf Journal Back 9 Report October is a transition month for Michigan golf courses. Golfers want to play as long as they can, and course superintendents want to complete winter preparations. Resorts like BOYNE and Treetops need to close courses by late October to have the hills ready for avid skiers that will be invading at the first sign of snow. Michiganders are blessed with changing seasons. Even though we complain about the cold, ice and snow, it gives us the perfect reason to head south for some warm weather and golf. In fact, Len Ziehm just returned from a trip to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and reports on the great golf, beautiful beaches and exquisite dining opportunities in Southern Alabama. Coastal Alabama is one of our favorite spots, as well. We always have a wonderful time there and can’t wait to return. Michigan lost one of its best golf course designers last month, when Jerry Matthews passed at the age of 88. He designed or renovated over 200 courses during his long career with nearly half of those in the state of Michigan. If you have played golf inMichigan, you have most certainly played on a Jerry Matthews design. We saw Team USA handily win the Presidents Cup, but did you know P.J. Maybank from Cheboygan was on the Junior President’s Cup team that came from behind to defeat the International team? It was a great 2022 summer golf season in Michigan and as long as the courses stay open, you can find me on the Back 9. Michigan Golf Journal
