I plan on playing a couple of the Walt Disney World Courses before the show and then teeing it up at the Bonita Bay Club near Naples before we come home. Speaking of the Disney Golf Courses, The Palm, The Magnolia and Lake Buena Vista are celebrating 50 years and have undergone massive renovations to restore the courses to their original splendor. The Arnold Palmer Golf Company oversees the Disney courses and both Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods won PGA Tour events at Disney, when the tour visited in years past. We are happy to bring you the February issue of Michigan Golf Journal filled with great content to get your golf year started. Club and ball reviews, travel segments, plus golf news are all included for your enjoyment. For 40 years golfers everywhere have agreed that Treetops Resort in northern Michigan is one of the very best golf destinations in the country. Here are a few reasons you should put Treetops at the top of your must-visit bucket list. First, the temperate summer climate is perfect for golf from April through September. Being near the 45th parallel means long days filled with abundant sunshine, plus those 70-degree days give way to pleasant evenings. The average high temperature for the Gaylord, Michigan area in June, July and August is slightly above 67 degrees. When the balance of the country is sweltering in August, temperatures at Treetops barely reach over 77 degrees with a low of 60 degrees. When asked about the state of his game, Hall of Fame Cincinnati Reds catcher, turned professional golfer, Johnny Bench would answer, “I play in the 60’s and 70’s. If it gets any hotter, or colder, I don’t play.” Johnny would certainly enjoy Treetops in the summertime. Second, the Threetops course at Treetops was one of the first par three courses at a golf resort and it is one of the most enjoyable short courses in the world. After a trip to the Masters Tournament in 1990, Rick Smith, at the time the Head Professional at Treetops, pitched the idea of adding a par-3 course to the resort. Small, slick greens, severe elevation changes and beautiful scenery make Threetops one of the best rounds of golf you will ever enjoy. It’s a must-play at the resort and set the trend for adding interesting short courses to golf destinations. For several years, top name professionals came to Threetops to compete in a two-day tournament aired on ESPN. In 2001, Lee Trevino made a holein-one at the 7th hole to win a skin worth over one million dollars. It was the first time a single shot earned over $1 million in golf history. Third, World Class designers like Robert Trent Jones Sr, Tom Fazio and Rick Smith have put their signatures on the courses at Treetops. When the Jones Masterpiece opened in 1986, Golf Digest named it the second-best new course in the country. The course features deep ravines, pesky sand traps, tough pin placements, numerous water hazards, and dramatic elevation changes. The Jones Masterpiece is the most challenging course at the resort, but take time to look back up each fairway, as the course is almost as beautiful backwards as it is forward. The Fazio Premier, was designed by Tom Fazio and opened for play in 1992. It is a special treat for guests of the resort as it is the only Fazio design in the state. The Premier’s rolling fairways and single water hazard, along with steep slopes and doglegs, is more forgiving than the Masterpiece, but will still provide a challenge for the most seasoned player. Rick Smith is credited with designing both The Smith Signature, which opened for play in 1993 and The Tradition, opened in 1997. Both courses have won numerous awards from golf publications over the years. With slopes, mounds and narrow fairways, the Signature course will keep every golfer on their toes. It’s the perfect blend between modern influence and classic designs from across the globe. In preparation to build the Signature, Smith traveled to Ireland and Scotland to study their historic courses. The Tradition, which opened to the public in 1997, was built for the golfer who appreciates the value of walking. It was built on the principle of returning golf to a more relaxing atmosphere and
comfort and an elevated experience in the Lodge and Inn during their stay.” If you stay in the recently renovated Chalets at Treetops, test your putting skills on the putting green just outside the door. Fifth, enjoy other outdoor activities such as, hiking, biking, fishing and swimming. Man does not live by golf alone. Play an enjoyable round in the morning and catch a spotted trout in the afternoon. Just lay by the pool, while sipping a cool beverage with a little umbrella in it or go on an invigorating hike. There is a plethora of fun and exciting things to do at Treetops. Sixth, with 17 direct flights into Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, it’s easy to reach northern Michigan. Once you land it’s just a little over an hour’s drive to Treetops. Fly in the morning and you will still have plenty of time to get in 18 holes before sunset. Seventh, Treetops is a year-round destination. Yes, there is fantastic golf at Treetops in the summer, but the resort also offers some of the best winter snow skiing in the Midwest. The resort actually began as a ski resort and added golf as a summer activity. the recent changes made in 2022, featured the removal of select trees, add to the Scottish links feel. Pinehurst Resort will break ground on its first new golf course in nearly three decades, and it will be designed by Michigan resident, Tom Doak, one of the most respected and decorated golf course architects of the modern era. Located four miles south of the main resort clubhouse, the new course is expected to open in late spring of 2024, coinciding with the return of the U.S. Open to Pinehurst. The new course will incorporate rugged dunes, accented by native sand and wiregrass. With natural ridgelines, intriguing landforms, towering longleaf pines, streams and ponds, Doak envisions a course that complements the resort’s other courses through its contrasts. “The site is topographicallydistinct anddrastically different from anywhere in Pinehurst,” Doak says. “It’s bigger, bolder and more dramatic. Moser’s impressive credentials include work at the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course, Streamsong Black in Bowling Green, Florida, St. Patrick’s Links in County Donegal, Ireland, Te Arai Links in Tomarata, New Zealand and Ohoopee Match Club in Cobbtown, Georgia. “The number one thing that excited us about the project is working with the beautiful sand that’s native to this region,” Doak says. “The sand, the wiregrass, the bluestem grass, and other native grasses that grow around the Sandhills create a fabulous texture for golf. It’s something most places just don’t have.” In addition to Doak’s routing, Pinehurst envisions the potential for more growth in the area, which encompasses 900 total acres in Aberdeen. EPSON Tour Offers Record $4.9 Million in Prize Money The EPSON Tour, ‘The Road to the LPGA’, holds two tournaments in Michigan, the Firekeepers Casino Hotel Championship and the Island Resort Championship. The tour announced a total of 22 events for 2023 offering a record $4.9 million in total prize money, with an average purse of $223,000. We know that golf has experienced a resurgence since the COVID pandemic swept the country in 2020, but the Pickleball craze is rapidly becoming one of the most popular sports at country clubs and tennis facilities around the country. Played on a badminton-sized court, 1/3 the size of a tennis court, Pickleball is a mash up of badminton, tennis and ping pong. It has seen a remarkable growth over the past two years. A total of 35 million people played the game last year. Several sports stars and celebrities including, Mark Cuban, Drew Brees, LaBron James and Tom Brady, have invested in the new professional Pickleball league. Residential communities once built around a golf course are now rushing to include pickleball courts for the locals to enjoy. The large real estate developer, Discover Land Company, offers pickleball courts at all of their 30 resort communities. Sports investors have taken notice of the tremendous growth. Pickleball equipment sales increased by over 100%. New Pickleball courts are being built as fast as contractors can complete them. substitute for tennis for older sports-minded participants. It was first enjoyed by older country club members as a fill-in for tennis requiring less rigorous movement around the court. It is primarily played near the net with quick reflexes necessary to react to volleys. Due to the smaller court, quickness not strength is more important and allows men and women to compete on an equal basis. The Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) has been developed to handicap players to compete in tournaments on a level playing field. Jack Barret has become a Pickleball enthusiast and recently moved into a senior living community near Port St. Lucie, Florida, which has 37 Pickleball courts. He told us, “Pickleball is inclusive for both men and women of all ages. If you can hold a paddle, you can play Pickleball. Skill level, age, or gender doesn’t matter.” It is played with a perforated plastic ball, similar to a whiffle ball, using wood, or composite paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors, or outdoors and is relatively easy for beginners to learn. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature. Pickleball can be played as singles, or doubles. No special apparel is needed, just something comfortable and appropriate for a court sport. Equipment is inexpensive and easily portable. It can be played at a leisurely pace, or at a highly competitive level, making it ideal for all ages and abilities. To help introduce the game to young players, Sam Veal has started The First Dink Foundation to combine youth Pickleball instruction and coaching with mentorship and life skills development. This is achieved through the Positive Youth Development Methodology, consisting of: Curiosity, Character, Connection, Caring, Competency, Confidence, and Contribution. NEW Paradym and Paradym X Irons From Callaway By Ed Travis Callaway Golf’s new Paradym and Paradym X iron models are made with they are calling “Paradym Shift Construction” featuring a hollow body filled with urethane spheres and an AIdesigned forged face. Callaway told me they targeted producing both “the best of ball speed and feel,” plus used “Paradym Shift Construction.” The process starts with their AI software used to design a very strong forged face that provides added ball speed as well as higher launch with more consistency. The iron’s hollow head is filled with small urethane balls and includes the sophisticated frame design that includes added stiffness to facilitate energy transfer to the face and thus the Michigan Golf Journal
ball. The urethane spheres help with the iron’s feel and sound. Tungsten weights were also used for balance and better launch characteristics, but still retain distance for off center contact. Scott Manwaring, Senior Director Research & Development at Callaway said, “There is a noticeable tick up in ball speed. We’re super pleased about that, but the main thing is we’re getting better and better with the 455 Face Cup with our A.I. The amount of effort we’re putting into A.I. in irons is a lot more work, because we have to do it for the wedges, we have to do it for the long irons, we have to do it for the mid irons. Callaway Golf has announced the new ‘Paradym’ family of clubs that includes drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, and irons. The new driver lineup has three models Callaway says are targeted to fill the needs of a variety of player skill levels. This new line is a “paradigm shift” to reflect how the design departs from the usual interplay of forgiveness and distance. The drivers use the company’s first all carbon chassis thus eliminating titanium which has been the industry standard particularly for drivers. Each of the three driver models again make use of a forged titanium face created using Callaway’s AI software as seen in previous models. With the substitution of carbon over titanium the overall clubhead weight is 44% less. The idea being to make a driver that ends the debate between distance and forgiveness. The goal was to maximize distance while also maximizing ball speed, should impact be off center. The carbon fiber body allowed engineers to relocate weight so that stability and distance are improved while helping decrease dispersion and increase the overall MOI. Callaway Director of R&D for woods, Evan Gibbs said, “The Standard Model with the sliding weight is going to fit the broadest segment of player, it’s the head shape that’s going to appeal to the most players, plus it’s the highest MOI model. And with that APW, you’ve got an opportunity to influence the shot shape. If you need a little more draw bias, you can go to the Paradym X with the slightly larger footprint, more draw bias, and higher launch and the most forgiveness. There was a time not long ago when direct-toconsumer golf ball companies were few and far between. Golfers would typically buy balls at the local golf shop minutes before teeing off, or at a big box store while shopping for other gear or household items. Entering 2023, however, the “DTC” channel continues to explode as golfers have migrated online to buy golf balls, clubs and apparel. One of the DTC category leaders over the past decade, OnCore Golf, caught fire in 2022 with OnCore Igniting ‘DTC’ Golf Ball Category in 2023 the release of two new golf balls. The Buffalo, New York-based company dropped the new ELIXR, a three-piece, 84-compression offering geared toward golfers with driver swing speeds between 85 and 100 mph. And in October, OnCore unveiled the four-piece VERO X2, the followup to the wildly successful VERO X1, aimed at players with 110 mph and above swing speeds. Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course Designed as a classic Tour style layout by Joe Lee, the Magnolia Golf Course is the longest of the Walt Disney World, playing at 7,560 yards from the Classic tees during tournaments, 7,141 yards from green tees and 6,684 from the white tees for daily play. Named for the Magnolia trees that line the fairways and elevated tees, it has undergone itsmost extensive redesign ever. Holes 14 through 17 are being reconfigured and all 18 greens are being substantially enhanced. Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course Designed in 1972 by Joe Lee, this course near Disney Springs winds through several of the resort properties, including Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa and Disney’s Old Key West Resort. The course plays between 5,177 and 6,745 yards and includes an island green on the par-3 seventh hole and a Mickey Mouse bunker that was added to the rear of the ninth green in 2018. Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course A nine-hole walking course, Disney’s OakTrail is well-suited for families and casual golfers. This course, originally only six holes and known as “The Wee Course”, was expanded in the 1990s by Ron Garl who designed the fifth, sixth and seventh holes to feature water hazards around a canal and pond. The par-36 layout can be played from junior tees (1,713 yards) or close to 3,000 yards (including a 517-yard par-5) from the white tees. Michigan Golf Journal

If you are looking for a reason to grab your travel bag to find your next golfing adventure, here are 10 NEW courses that help you explore new golf frontiers? 1. Te Arai Resort North Course, Tomarata, New Zealand It’s one helluva long flight to New Zealand. My gosh, it takes countless mini-bags of pretzels, brewskis and movies just to survive the 14-hour journey from West Coast U.S.A. If you’re a golfer who seeks to play some of the world’s most spectacular golf courses, Te Arai is well worth the arduous trip. Slated to open late this year (2023), this classic, drop dead gorgeous beauty set along the sea incorporates spacious fairways, expansive greens and wind-shaped sandscapes. Designed by Tom Doak, the North is the perfect combination of a great piece of land, imaginative earth moving and shaping and design artistry. Better still, you can also play the Te Arai Resort South Course, a Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw layout that debuted last year (2022). Situated 90 minutes north of Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island, Te Arai was developed by American Ric Kayne. 2. Cabot Citrus Farms, Brooksville, Florida I loved this place when it was known as World Woods. Unfortunately, it diminished in quality in recent years and was acquired by Canadian based developer Cabot, which is performing a stunning makeover that would make any Hollywood starlet proud. Some of the enhancements for the overall project include the addition of cottages and villas, a new clubhouse and nature paths. In total, upon 10
completion, the complex will include two 18hole courses, plus an 11-hole par-3 course and a 10-hole regulation-length course. Cabot Citrus Farms will also feature retail, restaurants, fitness and spa amenities, communal gathering spots, and a farmer’s market. Kyle Franz is the architect of record on both 18-hole redesigns (Pine Barrens and RollingOaks) andMikeNuzzo is co-designing Rolling Oaks with Franz and also overseeing the build of the other two shorter courses. The target date for the debut of Cabot Citrus Farms is late 2023. 3. Cabot Saint Lucia Point Hardy Golf Club, Saint Lucia, Caribbean Mention the word “Cabot” and you immediately think stunningly beautiful and wonderfully designed golf courses. After all, these are the same people who brought us Cape Breton in Nova Scotia (Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs). I can’t wait for their newest masterpiece, the Point Hardy Golf Club in Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, a jaw dropper situated on a 375-acre peninsula on the island of Saint Lucia in the Caribbean. The highlyrespected team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw had 1.5 miles of coastline to work with and they took full advantage of their good fortune. Perched above the Atlantic Ocean, the course weaves through verdant terrain, over rocky outcrops and along tropical bays and sandy beaches. “.. it is going to be one of the most visually dramatic courses in all of the world,” said Bill Coore in a recent interview with Golf Monthly. Point Hardy is slated to debut in the next few months (2023). 4. Landmand Golf Club, Homer Nebraska Who would’ve thunk Nebraska would be some kind golf mecca on the plains? Landmand, which Michigan Golf Journal
debuted late last year in the northeast corner of the state, joins amazing layouts like Sandhills, Dismal River and The Prairie Club if you visit the land of the Cornhusker. You’ll be blown away by the size and scope of Landmand, which spans 580 acres, about three times the size of an average course. Designed byTad King and Rob Collins of Sweetens Cove (Tennessee) fame, Landmand is a 7,200-yard, par-73 layout with super wide fairways, some up to 100 yards in width, and gargantuan greens. If you wanna grip it and rip and actually hit some greens (they’re really spacious so you can beef up your GIR stats) this is the place to do it. 5. RainDance National Resort & Golf Club, Windsor, Colorado From the back tees this behemoth plays to 7,845 yards and can be set up to play a whopping 8,485 yards. You’d expect the RainDance designer to be somebody like John Daly or even Tiger or Jack, who loved the long ball during their primes. No, no, no, the designer is none other than short hitter Fred Funk, who averaged 273 yards off the tee during his PGA Tour career. Funk teamed with Harrison Minchew, who spent nearly three decades as an in-house architect with Arnold Palmer, to fashion this long and winding course. Set in high desert at nearly 5,000 feet above sea level 55 miles north of Denver, the course features 250 feet of elevation changes and 20 to 30-foot deep arroyos. 6. Fields Ranch, Frisco, Texas Two of my favorite designers, Gil Hanse and Beau Welling, were selected to design the two 18-hole courses at the Omni PGA Frisco Resort adjacent to the new PGA of America headquarters about 35 miles north of Dallas. The East Course, designed by Hanse, is a wonderland of rolling terrain, dry washes, a meandering creek and prairie grasses that surround the holes. Welling’s West Course features more than 75 feet of elevation change, wide fairways averaging 75 feet wide, native field grasses, wetlands, live oaks and mesquite trees. There’s also a lighted 10-hole, par-3 short course (“The Swing”) at Fields Ranch. The Frisco PGA headquarters will host the 2027 PGA Championship. Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta, Comporta, Portugal Playing golf in Portugal is an extreme delight and this new layout by David McLay Kidd will make it even better. Here’s a toast of a chilled Vinho Verde to this magnificent design set to debut this summer (2023). Situated on the Alentejo coast about an hour south of Lisbon, the Dunas course is remindful of a north Florida coastal course with constant sea breezes, white sugar sand dunes and scrub pine. The complex also includes a golf academy designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia. 8. The Lido Golf Club, Rome, Wisconsin I’m not sure what to think of this new Tom Doak design. It’s either a tribute course, a replica, a clone or a combination of all three. In a wildly ambitious, daring and creative project, Doak was recruited to reproduce C.B. MacDonald’s legendary, long-lost masterpiece, The Lido. The new Lido in Central Wisconsin is a bold idea by the Keiser Brothers, Michael and Chris. The Lido will operate as a semi-private club with reportedly some tee times available to Sand Valley Resort guests. The original Lido opened on Long Island in 1914 and at the time of its opening was compared in shot making to Pine Valley and National Golf Links. Unfortunately, the course was demolished by the U.S. Navy after the Navy purchased the property for use as a military base during World War II. Michigan Golf Journal

London Airlinks Golf Course, London, England Due to open in Summer 2023, the London Airlinks Course in West London is set in the lush, picturesque Middlesex countryside. Measuring just under 6,000 yards, playing to par 71, the parkland course has several links style features including dramatic dunes and burns. Added bonuses are the incredible views of London golfers receive when standing on the elevated tees on the 14th hole, the unique Toptracer Range, economically priced greens fees and the convenient location just moments from junction 3 on the M4. 10. St Patrick’s Links, County Donegal, Ireland It’s not the newest kid in town since it has been open for more than a year, but St. Patrick’s at Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort should be on your must play short list for 2023. St Patrick’s is a Tom Doak masterpiece that adheres to his mantra of “Great land produces great courses.” St Patrick’s is ranked No. 55 in The World’s Top 100 Golf Courses by Golf Magazine. The superb routing takes golfers through a constantly changing links landscape that encompasses huge dunes, elevated tees with stunning views of Sheephaven Bay and lush undulating fairways. Doak has fashioned 18 distinct and unforgettable holes to create one of the world’s best links golf experiences.
