Michigan Golf Journal July 2024

The U.S. Junior Amateur will be held at Oakland Hills Golf Club July 22-27. This is the fifth time the championship has been held in Michigan. The University of Michigan Golf Course hosted the juniors in 1948. The junior amateur returned to the Lochmoor Club in 1962, Pine Lake Country Club, in 1980 and finally in 2010 to Egypt Valley Country Club. Qualifying was conducted at 42 sites, May 20 to June 24, to earn a spot at Oakland Hills. Competitors may not have a Handicap Index exceeding 2.4, and not have reached their 19th birthday by July 27, 2024. Several recognizable names have won the USGA’s Junior Amateur in the past: Gay Brewer (1949); Mason Rudolph (1950); Johnny Miller (1964); Gary Koch (1970); Willie Wood (1977); Charlie Rymer (1985); David Duval (1989); Tiger Woods (1991-93); Hunter Mahan (1999); Brian Harman (2003); Kevin Tway (2005); Jordan Spieth (2009, 2011); Scottie Scheffler (2013); Will Zalatoris (2014) and Min Woo Lee (2016) Tiger Woods is the only golfer to ever win three U.S. Junior Amateurs and he won them consecutively 1991-1993. GAM members are invited to play Oakland Hills North Course the same week as the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. Celebrating its 100th Anniversary, the North Course will be set in pristine national championship conditions, providing a memorable test of your game. On Friday, July 26, the shotgun start will commence at 10:00 AM on Oakland Hills’ North Course. Entry fee is $500.00 and you must be a GAM member to participate. CLICK HERE to register!
