Johnny Morris’ Ozarks golf wonderland — where every round feels magical
Phyllis C. Barone, Queen on the Green
In the heart of the Ozarks, Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, has created one of the most imaginative golf destinations in America. Though known for fishing rather than fairways, Morris felt compelled to showcase the rugged beauty of the Ozarks — a place deeply woven into his identity.
Across 1,200 acres, he has built something extraordinary: a “Disneyland of Fairways,” a golf and nature immersion that feels as imaginative as it is reverent.
Every hole feels like a story, every tee box a new chapter carved into the Ozarks. The views pull you in, the design challenges you, and the atmosphere reminds you why you fell in love with the game in the first place.
These courses don’t just showcase golf — they celebrate it, elevating every swing into something memorable.
And when you play them, you understand: this isn’t just golf. It’s an experience.
ARRIVING IN THE OZARKS
Your journey begins at Springfield–Branson National Airport, served by Allegiant, Delta, and United. It’s small, efficient, and your rental car is just steps from the terminal. Within minutes, you’re on your way into Branson’s Disneyland of Fairways — a collection of courses shaped by legendary designers including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Gary Player, and Johnny Morris himself.
Morris has been called everything from the “Walt Disney of the Outdoors” to “Walt Disney on steroids.” His Big Cedar Lodge golf properties reflect that same spirit of wonder, storytelling, and meticulous detail. Each course feels like its own themed world — dramatic, immersive, and unforgettable.
UNMATCHED PROXIMITY
One of the most astonishing aspects of golf in Branson is the unmatched proximity of its world-class courses. You can stay in one central location and access six elite layouts within 10 minutes of each other.
No long drives. No wasted time. Just pure golf immersion.
This density of championship-level design is rare anywhere in the world — and it’s part of what makes Johnny Morris’ vision feel so intentional.

THE COURSES
Payne’s Valley — Tiger Woods Design
Payne’s Valley (Tiger’s first public-access course in the U.S.) feels like a grand stage built for unforgettable moments. Wide fairways invite bold swings, while cliff-lined par 3s and sweeping valley views create a sense of scale rarely seen in Midwest golf.
The routing flows through meadows and limestone rock formations before building toward a theatrical finish that feels more like a theme park attraction than a closing hole.
Signature Hole: The 19th — “The Big Rock”
An island green framed by 200-foot cliffs and cascading waterfalls — one of the most photographed holes in America. A hole-in-one on the 19th earns a $1,000 gift card to Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s — another magical touch that makes Payne’s Valley unforgettable.
Ozarks National — Coore & Crenshaw
Ozarks National offers a more natural, minimalist test. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw let the land dictate every contour, creating a rugged walk across high ridgelines and native glades.
Long wooden bridges stretch across deep ravines, connecting tee boxes with panoramic views of the Ozark Mountains. It’s pure, strategic golf — rewarding creativity, patience, and angle management.
Signature Hole: Hole 13 — The Ridgeline Par 3
A breathtaking one-shotter playing across a deep valley to a green perched on a natural shelf.
Buffalo Ridge — Tom Fazio
Buffalo Ridge is Tom Fazio at full drama. The course winds through valleys, streams, and rolling meadows, with roaming buffalo grazing near several holes — a surreal, almost safari-like touch.
Waterfalls, sculpted bunkers, and bold elevation changes make it one of Missouri’s most visually striking courses. It’s as strategic as it is scenic, with risk-reward moments everywhere you look.
Signature Hole: Hole 15 — The Waterfall Par 4
A downhill shot over a spring-fed creek to a green framed by rock outcroppings and cascading water.
Top of the Rock — Jack Nicklaus (Par 3)
Top of the Rock is part golf course, part nature trail, part outdoor museum. Jack Nicklaus sculpted a series of dramatic one-shot holes perched above Table Rock Lake.
The cart path winds through caves, past waterfalls, and by a chapel set on a cliff known as the Chapel of the Ozarks, where touring pros were married and ceremonies have taken place overlooking the lake — adding a sense of history and romance to the setting.
It’s short in yardage, but massive in experience.
Evenings end with a bagpiper on the cliffside and the firing of a Civil War–era cannon — a moment that echoes across the water and stays with you long after. Be ready for the blast — the cannon fire is powerful enough to shake your hands and ruin your photo if you’re not prepared. It’s part ceremony, part performance, and entirely unforgettable.
Top of the Rock also served as the site of the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf from 2014 to 2019, further cementing its place in golf history.
Signature Hole: Hole 6 — The Cliffside Drop
A dramatic downhill shot to a green set against the lake, with a waterfall tumbling beside the tee.
Hole 2 is a dramatic par 3 where the back tee sits perched high on the mountain. To reach it, golfers walk through a unique tunnel carved naturally through a massive rock formation.
Mountain Top Golf Course — Gary Player and Johnny Morris
Carved into the Ozark Mountains, the walking-only course navigates through dramatic 300-million-year-old limestone rock formations and offers breathtaking elevated views. Located in Ridgedale, just south of Branson, it’s within a 10-minute drive to all the other five courses.
Cliffhanger — Johnny Morris and son Paul
Cliffhanger is the adrenaline piece of the collection — the thrill ride of Branson golf. Dramatic elevation changes, cliff-edge greens, and jaw-dropping views make every hole feel like an adventure.
The highlight is the Lion’s Den, where players tee off from inside a cave behind a waterfall — a moment that feels straight out of an adventure film.
But for me, the moment came at Hole 10, where the cliffs open and the valley drops away. Stepping up to the dramatic cliffside tee box (ironically named Cliffhangers), I took my shot and anxiously watched my ball roll left to right across the green before gently dropping into the cup.
It wasn’t just a shot. It wasn’t just a moment. It was the culmination of everything this place represents — imagination, beauty, challenge, and Disney-like magic.
Here, I made my first hole-in-one — a memory forever tied to this imaginative landscape.
What followed were screams of joy echoing across Big Cedar — a moment of shared excitement that seemed to ripple through the entire property.
Signature Hole: Hole 3 — “The Lion’s Den”
STAYING IN THE HEART OF IT ALL
While Johnny Morris’ courses define the Branson golf experience, we based our trip at Thousand Hills Golf Resort, a centrally located stay-and-play option just minutes from Big Cedar’s collection of courses.
Though not part of the Morris portfolio, Thousand Hills provided an ideal home base for exploring Branson golf. The Robert Cupp-designed course winds through rolling terrain with elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and scenic water features that make for an enjoyable round in its own right.
The Thousand Hills Cottages sit directly along the fairways, offering spacious accommodations and easy access to both the golf course and Branson’s entertainment district. After long days spent playing the Ozarks’ dramatic layouts, it was the perfect place to relax, recharge, and reset for the next round.
Signature Hole: Hole 12 — The Lakeside Par 3
A picturesque shot over water to a green tucked against a wooded hillside.
Branson golf isn’t just played — it’s felt. After days immersed in the dramatic landscapes of Johnny Morris’ golf wonderland — and evenings returning to the comfort of Thousand Hills Golf Resort — Branson becomes more than a destination. It becomes a forever golf memory touched by a little Ozarks magic.
