A Club Fitting Can Help You Enjoy Golf More

By Kevin Frisch

In 2017, after some years of struggling with consistency and distance with my irons, I decided it was time to get custom fitted and went through the Club Champions’ fitting process. It was completely next level, adding 10-15 yards to my irons – over a club longer, and more consistent shot-making. For a guy who just turned 50, it was life-changing.

Club Champion’s advanced fitting process added a measure of precision worthy of a tour professional. Needless to say, my enjoyment of the game increased exponentially.

I was so happy with the results of the iron fitting, that at the beginning of 2018, I decided to go back for a driver fitting.

Once again it was immediately evident to my fitter, Nick, that my steep swing was creating too much spin with my current driver. After testing a variety of shafts and heads, from their inventory of over 35,000 various combinations, he recommended a Titleist D3, with 8.5 degrees of loft and a 65-gram VA Slay Shaft.

After analyzing some additional shots and the numbers with Trackman, Nick was still not fully satisfied. He felt he could gain more improved performance by adjusting the driver to the C1 setting, which decreases the loft down to 7.75 degrees.

I was skeptical about decreasing loft, especially with most manufacturers praising the advantages of increased loft. The phenomenal results I had received from the prior iron fitting allowed me to believe and trust Nick’s analysis.

The result: my driver distance increased from a baseline of 251 yards to 268 yards, with a lower launch and ball flight. The best in over 15-years by simply using the correct club and shaft combination.

These phenomenal results prompted me to ask a couple questions. I caught up with another Nick, Club Champion’s co-founder Nick Sherburne and asked him about what makes Club Champion successful.

Can you talk about the process your club-fitters go through for training, including some specifics on the classroom training?

“We call it Club Champion University. The first week is learning how we do everything, and the second week they work in our store in Willowbrook (Ill.) with our team of seasoned veterans. We add more each week, and by the time they leave they know what they need to know to work for Club Champion. They know how to work with swing weights, bend clubs, shafts, every part of what we do. Our guys learn a great knowledge of fitting, the ability to fit all brands for all the shots.”

Where do you see club-fitting going in the future?

“I think club fitting will continue to grow. People are starting to believe it now. You used to hear a lot of this is too expensive, or I’m not good enough. I heard that for 20 years and I would laugh. Why limit how good you can be? It’s a couple bucks across the bag to enjoy the game better, the game you spend so much time playing. I tell beginners, yes they should get fitted. Get fitted and start getting better.”

Everyone at Club Champion is driven by the single goal to help every single golfer have the right club in their hand for every shot. These two Club Champion fittings were the most significant improvements I have made to my golf game in years.
