Ally Challenge Brings Energy Back to Warwick Hills

The PGA Tour Champions brought so much more than a nostalgic return to Warwick Hills, once the proud host of the Buick Open for many decades. Great golf was contested in Grand Blanc the third weekend of September by many of the great names who played there for so many years in their younger prime.

Yet even with age there was no drop off in golf skills, or power, or thrills for the fans.

Paul Broadhurst won for the third time this season and second time in Michigan in 2018 (he took the Senior PGA crown at Benton Harbor in May) with a three-round 15-under par 201 to win $300,000. Following close behind were Brandt Jobe at 203, Mark O’Meara and Tom Lehman at 204; plus David Toms, Rocco Mediate and Gene Sauers at 205.

“Professional golf is officially back in Michigan,” Tournament Director Chris Coffman said as the final groups were coming down the back stretch. “The PGA Tour has bene gone for nine years but this has been a successful week and the Tour is very happy to be back here with the Tour Champions, Ally Challenge presented by McLaren.

“I think the fans are happy about it. The players are definitely excited about it. Everyone is pleased. Anytime you can have an event that produces hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity, it’s a good thing. It’s great to see so many smiles.

“Fred Couples told us this week that he’s thrilled to be here and can’t wait to come back and that we’re on the right track, and that this will be one of the most popular tournaments on this Tour in a short time,” Coffman added. “We’ll continue to get really great players and it’s a real treat for this community.

“Grand Blanc is right again, right with the world again, on the correct axis again, now that we have a Tour event, which is really great.”

Kenny Perry was one of dozens of players happy to be back in Michigan, to the point he said fans can expect him to be in the new PGA Tour event next June at Detroit Golf Club.

“What a joy to be back here, and to see everybody, to see the enthusiasm, the excitement,” Perry said after finishing T17. “The golf course is immaculate as always, fun to play. Enjoyed the heck out of it.”

Mark O’Meara had similar sentiments after the final round, despite not getting enough for the win.

“I’m proud the way I played, and it was a good tournament,” he said. “It’s great to be here at Grand Blanc again, back at Warwick Hills. And certainly my relationship with Ally, it means so much to me that they would come and support the community like they have. So, we’ll be excited to come back again next year.”
