MSU Women Finish Third in East Lansing NCAA Division I Regional
The Michigan State women’s golf team finished in third place at the East Lansing Regional to earn yet another trip to the NCAA Championships.
Top-seeded USC won the East Lansing Regional, followed by Oklahoma State, MSU, Northwestern and Pepperdine with all advancing to the NCAA Women’s DI Championship.
Notre Dame’s Lauren Beaudreau, playing as an individual, claimed medalist honors by shooting a 12-under-par.
MSU senior Leila Raines led the Lady Spartans at 6-under for the three rounds. Junior Katie Lu, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, placed 14th with an even-par total.
Shannon Kennedy, an MSU junior, carded an even-par 72 in the final round, while sophomore Paula Balanzategui posted a one-over par, 73 to round out MSU’s team scores in the third round.
Women’s NCAA Division 1 National Championship
In the NCAA Women’s Division 1 Championship, held at Omni La Costa Resort, in California, the Lady Spartans finished 17th. Windy conditions made playing conditions difficult and the team did not make the cut for the final day.
Even though the team did not advance to the final round, senior Leila Raines and junior Katie Lu finished inside the top 10 and made it into the Individual Championship.
Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll was proud of Raines and Lu,
“It was a pretty special day for our program to have two student-athletes representing Michigan State in the final round of the NCAA Championships. It was a great experience to see two of our best players, who are also roommates, get to play one final collegiate round together as teammates, it doesn’t get much better than that. We finished 17th in the nation and once again have proven that we are one of the best programs in the nation.”
Raines eventually finished tied for 28th and Lu finished in a tie for 45th. It was the second consecutive year Lu made it to the final round.

Wayne State Women Finish Season at NCAA Division II Regionals
The Wayne State Women’s Golf Team also competed in the Carmel, Indiana NCAA DII Women’s Regional finishing 13th and did not qualify for the National Championships.
NCAA Men’s Golf Championship
No Michigan university golf team made it to the NCAA Division I Championship this year, but Grand Valley State qualified for the Division II Championship held at Orange County National Golf Club in Winter Garden, Florida.
After a first round stroke play GVSU found themselves in the top five and in great shape to make it to the match play portion of the championship. The next two rounds did not go quite as well for the Lakers. They dropped to the 10th spot and did not qualify for the match play segment.
