Amateur female golfers dreaming of a chance to compete in an LPGA tournament can soon sign up for the LPGA Volvik Championship Amateur Pre-Qualifier. The opportunity to play into the professional event will happen on Thursday, May 17 at Ann Arbor’s Leslie Park Golf Course.
The number of amateur qualifiers allowed to advance has expanded from two to three.
“We have the unique opportunity to allow amateur golfers a chance to qualify for an LPGA sanctioned event,” said LPGA Volvik Championship Tournament Director Keith Karbo. “The LPGA pre-qualifying event is a great way for amateur golfers to showcase their skills.”
The three amateurs who card the lowest scores during the pre-qualifier will be invited into the official LPGA Local Qualifier to be held at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti the following Monday. The top two finishers there will join the 144-player field for the LPGA Volvik Championship at Travis Pointe Country Club, May 24-27.
“This season, all tournaments hosting a qualifier will have three amateur invitations,” Karbo added. “In the first two seasons of our tournament, we had two spots.”
Last year, Traverse City’s Anika Dy and Brighton’s Hannah Pietila each posted a 77 to win the 2017 pre-qualifier.
All participants MUST hold amateur status. As defined by the USGA: an amateur golfer, whether she plays competitively or recreationally, is one who plays golf for the challenge it presents, not as a profession and not for financial gain. Every amateur entry must satisfy the handicap requirement of a USGA Handicap index of 2.0 or less (or the equivalent handicap from the governing body of another country).
Entries will open for LPGA Volvik Championship qualifier on Monday, April 9, 2018, at 8:00 a.m. EDT.
