Golf was first added to the Olympic slate of competition in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro. With the resounding success of the sport the International Olympic (IOC) Executive Committee has added a new golf event for the 2028 Olympics that will be held in Los Angeles.
Antony Scanlon, the International Golf Federation’s executive director, was quoted as saying,
“We’re absolutely thrilled to see a Mixed-Team Event added to the program for Los Angeles 2028. Golf’s success at Paris 2024 and the momentum from previous Olympics led to this exciting addition, which will showcase the sport even more through this new format.”
The mixed-team event will complement the Men’s and Women’s Individual Olympic Golf Competitions. All three Olympic Golf events will be contested at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
The mixed-team event, one man and one woman paired together, will be contested as a 36-hole competition. The two-day competition will include18 holes of foursomes (alternate shot) and 18 holes of four-ball (best ball) on the second day.
IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said of the new Olympic competition,
“The mixed events are a real true embodiment of gender equality − men and women competing in the same team, on the same field of play for their country. We’ve seen the real success of these mixed-gender events.”
There will be a maximum of one team per country, with teams comprised of one male and one female who are already qualified for the Men’s and Women’s Individual Olympic Golf Competitions.
The Mixed-Team Event will take place after the four-round Men’s Individual Olympic Golf Competition, and prior to the four-round Women’s Individual Olympic Golf Competition.
