For the 8th straight year, the Symetra Tour, the official qualifying Tour for the LPGA, will compete at the Sweetgrass Golf Club for the Island Resort Championship.
The tournament will be contested June 22 through June 24 and will be the 9th tournament in the Tour’s 21 event season. At the conclusion of the Symetra Tour season, the Top 10 money earners in the Volvik Race for the Card will earn LPGA Tour membership for the 2019 season.
Sweetgrass Golf Club is considered one of the most challenging courses on Tour. The lowest winning score is 10-under (2015), but the winning score has been as high as 1-under (2014). Sweetgrass is a par-72 and will play 6,439 yards for the tournament.
“When the Island Resort Championship joined the Symeta Tour in 2011, it set a new standard for course conditioning and overall player experience,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Tour. “This tournament really gave us a new elevated vision for the future of the Tour, and much of the success we’ve seen on the Symetra Tour in the last few years can be attributed to Island Resort raising the bar for us back in 2011.”
This year the field of 144 players from the United States and more than 30 countries around the globe will compete for a $150,000 tournament purse. The winner will earn $22,500 and will be propelled towards the top of the Volvik Race for the Card Money List.
Four of the last five winners of the Island Resort Championship have gone on to earn an LPGA Tour card: Kim Kaufman (2013), Dani Holmquist (2015) Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong (2016) and Emma Talley last year.
Additionally, the Island Resort Championship will once again be part of the Potawatomi Cup, a four-tournament series that awards $40,000 in prize money to the top performers in the four events hosted by Potawatomi Nations casinos.
