Don’t Get Caught in the Weeds

Michigan marijuana on golf course

Michigan’s Proposal 1 which, among other things, legalizes the adult recreational use of marijuana, went into effect on December 6, 2018. While recreational cannabis is legal in Michigan, that doesn’t mean adults of age can consume marijuana everywhere – in fact golf courses are off limits for this type of ‘weed.’

Public cannabis consumption is strictly illegal in Michigan, as is driving under the influence of marijuana.  You might think that since you can enjoy a cigar or a Marlboro while playing your golf round that no one will notice if you are smoking “something else.” Please don’t get caught up in that assumption.

It’s important to note that consumers won’t be able to purchase legal cannabis commercially right away. Michigan’s cannabis sales won’t begin until early 2020 as state lawmakers still need to iron out regulations and licensing. Nevertheless, ten days after the certification of election results cannabis was officially legal for adults 21 years of age or older.

That said, you cannot smoke (or consume) marijuana in public. Or drive under the influence. That’s still illegal.

And just because you can consume it, you still can’t buy it. There is currently no legal place to purchase recreational cannabis in our state. Michigan’s state and local governments must establish regulations before products hit the shelves. That will take about two years, as the initiative gives the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs 24 months to create and start distributing licenses. Initial reports predict the first recreational cannabis dispensaries in Michigan are to open in early 2020.

Regardless of when the state completes the process to allow you to purchase marijuana, you will still not be able to consume it in public, including on the golf course. So, grab a beer, legally purchased at your favorite golf course.  And enjoy in moderation, of course.
