Men’s: Alex Scott
Alex Scott of Traverse City and Kerri Parks of Flushing earned GAM’s top player of the year honors for men and women, respectively.
Scott qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach with a second-round 6-under 66 to tie for medalist honors in the sectional at Currie Municipal Golf Course in Midland. Once at Pebble Beach he qualified for match play with a T10 in stroke play, and then fell 1-up in the first round of match play to the top-ranked junior amateur golfer in the world, William Mouw of California.
Just a few weeks prior to playing in the U.S. Amateur, Scott shot a record 11-under 61 in the final round of the Michigan PGA’s Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain Resort. His 61 on the Alpine course put him in a playoff with Sam Weatherhead, a professional from Grand Rapids, and Scott emerged the winner. Scott, a GAM member through Traverse City Golf & Country Club, was the first amateur to win the TOC in its 27 years of existence.
His Honor Roll total of 805 points topped Jake Kneen of White Lake, who became just the 6th amateur to win the Michigan Open Championship in its 101 years, last summer. Rounding out the top five were Michigan Amateur Champion Beau Breault (EMU) of Hartland, GAM Champion James Piot (MSU) of Canton and Donnie Trosper (MSU) of Canton.
Women’s: Kerri Parks
Parks (Marshall University) finished her summer golf schedule by winning the Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship at Western Golf & Country Club in Redford.
“I don’t think summers can end better than that,” she said. “That was a great accomplishment for me. I’m proud of the way I worked through the year. I ended the summer with a bang.”
Elayna Bowser (Loyola) of Dearborn was second to Parks in the Women’s Amateur and in the Honor Roll. Next came Allyson Geer (MSU) of East Lansing, Aya Johnson of Muskegon (Univ. of Wisc.) and Sarah Shipley of Hastings (Univ. of Kentucky).

GAM Senior Players of the Year
Men’s: Mitch Wilson
Mitch Wilson of Portage, the 61-year-old Kalamazoo College golf coach, has qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship starting field four of the last five years, and in 2018 he made it through to match play at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
“That tournament has become my top goal of each year,” he said. “It’s just such a treat to play in that championship.”
Wilson totaled 295 Honor Roll points keyed by his U.S. Senior Amateur showing and from being runner-up to Bill Zylstra in the GAM Senior Match Play Championship. Zylstra of Dearborn Heights was second with 275 points. Next were GAM Senior Champion David Bartnick of Livonia, Matt Wiley of Westland and Randy Lewis of Alma. Lewis was a college teammate of Wilson at CMU.
Wilson said he tries to stay fit and hopes to continue to play at a high level.
“Every year it seems somebody else really good turns 55 and it just gets tougher,” he said. “I still find great satisfaction in playing well. Everybody has a better sense of the competition, and they seem to enjoy the game more. I think we are all grateful to be out here competing.”
Super Senior: Mike Fedewa
Fedewa, age 69, was old enough to play in the Super Seniors division of GAM championships four seasons ago, but he didn’t embrace the idea until the summer of 2018.

He was runner-up in the GAM Senior Match Play Super Senior bracket to Pete Saputo of Bloomfield Hills, second to Rick Herpich of Orchard Lake in the GAM Senior Championship Super Senior division, second to Tom Rex Jr. of Charlevoix in the GAM Mid-Am Super Senior division and second in the Michigan PGA’s Senior Open to Mike Sequite of Marshall.
