Central Michigan junior Meghan Deardorff disqualified herself for signing an incorrect scorecard in the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational on Oct. 1 – then bounced back one week later to place T3 at the 54-hole Mid-American Conference Fall Preview near Toledo.
Deardorff, from Clarkston, discovered the scoring error herself and reported it to tournament officials at EMU.
“To Meghan’s credit she realized the mistake,” said CMU coach Jim Earle. “She could have said nothing to anyone, and she wasn’t having it. She wasn’t going to walk away from there with signing for an incorrect score. It was an innocent error; it was a great show of character on Meghan’s part to disqualify herself.”
EMU won the team title at their home course.
Deardorff’s resolve and honor next prepared her for the very difficult MAC Fall Preview, one week later. Her T3 (229) was a career-high finish, and ties for the second-best finish for an individual in CMU program history.
“Her performance this week under some extremely difficult circumstances solidifies her as one of the real leaders of the team and serves as a great example for the freshmen on this team,” Earle added.
